10 ways to improve your website design

Here are three interesting facts about websites and website visitors we are sure you haven’t heard of:

– According to the HubSpot Blog, 32% of people will stop engaging with a website if its content is unattractive.

– Komarketing stated that 40% of smartphone and tablet owners search for B2B products on those devices.

– The average human attention span has declined from 12 seconds (2000) to 8 seconds (2018), according to Hosting Facts.

Out of all these statements, the one that catches our attention the most is definitely the third one. Why? Well, because an 8-second attention span (which, apparently, humans now have) is shorter than that of a goldfish (9 seconds). So, with this in mind, how are you supposed to keep visitors on your small business website?
The answer is simple: with a good website design.

But what does a “good website design” mean exactly? It means a website that’s attractive to your users and simple to navigate, so that they stay engaged. It means fast load speed, the right colors, and cool illustrations, i.e. everything that will stop your visitors from bouncing back from your website five seconds after they land on it.
However, what happens if your website isn’t already optimized the way it should be? What are your options?
The first thing that comes to mind is a redesign. A redesign includes a change of the design layout, graphics, fonts and anything else that viewers might find confusing or unappealing.

What you need to keep in mind, though, is that a whole new redesign can be quite expensive and requires a lot of time. Furthermore, there are always some areas of the website that can’t be altered once they are designed. So, investing a lot of money in a project that most likely won’t provide the best solution for you might not be ideal.
What else can you do then? Instead of investing time in creating a “new look” for your website while still maintaining the previous version, try implementing a few changes that require less time, don’t cost as much, but can be more effective. And even if you notice that your competitors have redesigned their websites, remember that new isn’t always better, especially when the “new look” is time-consuming and requires more investment.

In the infographic below, we have covered 10 ways that can help you improve your website design (without redesigning it completely!)—from keeping the design fresh with whitespace, to illustrations, animation, and more. We are positive you are going to find something that can be useful and easily implemented.
Good luck and design on!
