From your hands to the customer: How to start a business based on handmade goods

Many people dream of one day being their own boss. There are many ways to start your own business. Overall, you need to choose something you’re good at and passionate about. If your passion is craftwork, you should consider starting your own business selling handmade goods. It’s possible to make a healthy living while greatly enjoying your work every single day. It’s not easy though. So make sure you’re prepared.

Perform market research

You go into business to make money and a profit. While your craftwork was once your hobby, it won’t be any more after you start your business. As such, you need to make sure you are creating products that actually have a market. While you may enjoy creating things based on your own preferences, but you might have to adjust or expand your repertoire to appeal to a broader audience. Perform market research to see what kind of handmade goods consumers are actually buying. Make adjustments to your business plans based on the information you uncover.

Find distribution partners for your products

The second issue is figuring out exactly how to get your product out to consumers. While you could open your own store that requires a lot of overhead expenses that could eat up your revenue. You may be better selling your products online. Alternatively, you could sell your products at other people’s businesses. Inquire about the possibility. If you put in enough effort, you may even be able to get picked up by a large retail chain if you are able to mass produce your products.

Create a mass production process

Even though your products are mostly created by hand, you still need to work on developing a quick and efficient production process. If you want to achieve optimal success, you’re going to need to be able to mass produce your products. Investigate different strategies that can increase the number of products you produce while maintaining a high level of quality. For example, you could try to find a polyurethane casting material supplier so you can pour resins into a mold to mass replicate certain elements of your product.

Implement quality control

You also need to implement a strict process for quality control. Products that you mass create for sale should be as close to the same as possible. In fact, you should create blueprints and diagrams that represent exactly how the finished product should look and measure. If individual products in the same line are too dissimilar, stores may not want to stock them. With certain objects that you sell, part of the appeal may be their slight differences. Even if you are crafting more individualized works, it can be important to have a quality assurance system in place.

Overall, going into the crafts business is not easy. It requires a lot of planning, strategy, networking and hard work to be successful.
