Since 1963, the Small Business Administration (SBA) has celebrated National Small Business Week during the first week of May to recognize the critical contributions America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners make to our nation. More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and small businesses create about two out of every three new jobs created in America each year. Now that is something worth celebrating.

The theme of this year’s weeklong celebration is “Dream Big, Start Small.” And isn’t that really what we all do when we start down the path to owning and then growing a small business? In communities all across the nation, small business owners who have traveled this path will be recognized with awards from their local SBA offices in recognition of their success and their contributions to their communities’ economic well-being.

The SBA will be streaming a number of live events on their website this week, plus corporations that are co-sponsoring the celebration are offering five webinars on topics of interest to small business owners. Topics include Taking the Mystery Out of Voluntary Benefits; Access to Capital and Business Loans: Best Practices; and Cloud, Mobile and Social: Great Apps and Services That Will Grow Your Business. You can sign in for the live events at www.sba.gov/nsbw and for the webinars at www.sba.gov/nsbw/webinars.

Use the hashtag #DreamSmallBiz in your social media this week and let your followers know you’re a proud member of America’s small business community. Also, the SBA suggests that you tell the world what entrepreneurship means to you by posting an #EntrepSelfie with the “Dream Big, Start Small” meme.
