Need inspiration to take your small business to the next level in 2013? Check out this TV show

I’ve always been a big proponent of mentoring so last week when someone mentioned a show to me that features mentors giving advice to small business owners, I immediately checked it out. “Bloomberg The Mentor” matches up a small business owner with an A-list entrepreneur, who provides advice on how to take their business to the next step.

I watched episodes on Netflix streaming video, which has all the shows from the first two season. It’s unclear if more new episodes are in the works, but just watching the ones that are already available online should prove helpful to any small business person.

I have been impressed by the caliber of the mentors in the episodes I’ve watched so far. For example, who better to advise a microbrewery in San Diego than Jim Cook, founder of the Boston Beer Company, maker of Samuel Adams? The two microbrewery partners were about to spend a fortunate on setting up a bottling line, but Cook convinced them they didn’t need to do that yet, so they decided to just grow their keg business. Given the size of the market they’re operating in and the demand they’ve already generated for their product, this should be no problem and is much less risky than getting into the bottling business, where the margins are lower.

Each episode of the show runs about 24 minutes so you can get a quick burst of inspiration and good advice in a short period of time. Although some of the advice is specific to the small business in question, much of it is wisdom that would benefit any small business owner.

So for quick bursts of world-class mentoring for your small business, check out “Bloomberg The Mentor,” either on Netflix streaming video or on YouTube. It’s also available through Hulu Plus if you belong to that.
