Top tips for how to keep your staff motivated

By Rosana Beechum

When your employees are happy and motivated, your small business will thrive and do better. For most businesses, especially those providing a service, the people who work for you are at the heart of the business and are what make it what it is. It is important that you find ways to help keep your staff motivated and productive. Here, we take you through some of our favourite ways as to how you can achieve this in your business.

Be a supportive leader

One of the easiest ways that you can motivate your employees is to be a supportive leader. To do this, you should be working closely with your employees and ensure that you are helping to develop new talent. You should also be a role model to your staff and create office conditions that make for a more productive workplace.

All employees want to know that their hard work is being recognised and appreciated. We all spend the majority of our day at work and so this should be an environment that you want to spend time in and not one that you come to dread. A good boss will encourage their team to share information and knowledge, and this also means that you will need to make sure that not only are you a good talker, but that you are also a good listener too. Another great way to empower individuals is to give them more challenging assignments that will take them out of their comfort zone.

Working as a team

While your employees should be able to work as individuals, it is also important that they are able to work well together as a team. After all, it is teamwork that makes the dream work! Teamwork helps employees to build trust with one another and will keep them focused. A little healthy competition in a team setting is also beneficial to both employees and your company.

A great way to keep employees motivated is to hold team days throughout the year. This is the perfect way to show them that how much they are appreciated, plus it helps with the team building skills that we previously mentioned. Why not organize a summer BBQ on a Friday afternoon in the office? Or during the winter season, you could call in Team Tactics Christmas parties to organize a fantastic Christmas party for your workplace. They can tailor your Christmas party to your needs and make it a night to remember for all your employees!

Reward

If you really want to get the most out of your workplace, the best way to do so is through rewards, rather than scolding. These only have to be little rewards such as an employee of the month title or a gift certificate for a favorite store, restaurant or movie theater, but it really can make a massive impact. Doing this on a regular basis shows that your employees are appreciated, and this will help them to stay motivated.

When your employees are bored, they are far less likely to be motivated and definitely won’t be as productive. If you want to keep your office motivated and lively, try to avoid set routines and allow your employees to become more inventive and explore. Schedule in some short breaks as this will allow people to interact with each other and prevent them from chatting too much when they should be working!
