Gone are the days when working meant you had to go into an office from 9-5. The work from home generation is in full force, and (even before Covid19 made it more challenging than ever to go into an office) numbers of workers in a full-time office were lower than ever. There are many plus points to working from home, both for employers and employees. If you are considering changing your policies so that the majority of your employees work from home, there are many reasons why this is a good idea. Here are just a few…

-It saves you costs

Let’s face it; an office is a significant overhead. Not only do you have to cover the costs of the office rent itself, but you also need to pay for the electricity, water, and heating that is used. This can soon rack up a pretty hefty bill. If your employees are working from home, you don’t need to worry about this and save yourself a lot of money. In times such as the pandemic, which has been the main obstacle for business in 2020, you are going to want to save as much as possible to keep your business afloat. This is one way to do so.

-Your employees are more motivated

For many employees, working in an office can eat into their work-life balance. They spend a lot of their time traveling and end up leaving the house early or getting home late. This means they miss out on many moments at home, such as putting their kids to bed or eating dinner with their partner. By eradicating this and putting your trust in them they are likely to feel a lot more motivated and want to work hard to show you this is a system that works. You could always recommend them a local coworking space if they miss the buzz of an office every once in a while!

-It reduces time traveling to and from the office

Employees can spend up to a couple of hours traveling to work every day, and by the time they have got in, made a cup of coffee, caught up with colleagues, and sat down at their desks, a lot of time has been wasted. By having them work from home, they cut out all this, and there are much fewer excuses to be late! They will no longer get caught up in traffic or be hindered by weather such as snowstorms stopping them coming in. They will be able to sit down at their desks and get to work on time and also be more motivated from having had more of a lie-in in the morning.

These are just a few reasons that allowing your employees to work from home is a good idea. It could be that you trial it for a few weeks, or start by letting them do it a day or two a week and seeing how it goes, then adapting your plan from there. Be sure to still set the rules down of how you want working from home to be conducted, and don’t forget to check in with your staff members regularly.
